The effects of climate change and the failure of crops has put hundreds of families in danger of becoming malnourished

Nicaragua, one of the poorest countries in South America, has been contending for decades with issues around access to basic sanitation, high rates of chronic child malnutrition, and its vulnerabilities to natural disasters. Most families in the communities we work in depend on agriculture for their main source of income. Livestock and crops are failing year on year due to scarce, dry landscapes and the effects of climate change, affecting both the nutritional status of these families and their possibilities of achieving an income by selling produce.

People we helped in 2017

Action Against Hunger has been working in the country since 1996, setting up programmes focused on food security, nutrition, health, water, and other basic services. We implement programmes that recognize the importance of active participation of both the people we help and of civil society in defining priorities and following through with action.

We are working alongside communities and local authorities to improve the provision and marketing of tourist attractions as an alternative socioeconomic development strategy to subsistence agriculture.
