Don't starve our future

What Action Against Hunger are calling for at COP27.

It’s estimated that around 828 million people worldwide don’t have enough to eat. A number that continued to rise during 2022.

There are many reasons for this. Increasing conflict, including the war in Ukraine, global inequality and the lack of access to essentials rights and services like clean water and health care.

But one of the biggest drivers of hunger is extreme weather caused by the climate crisis. Today, 27 of the 35 countries most affected by climate breakdown are experiencing extreme food insecurity. By 2050, up to 80 million people could face hunger, particularly in Africa, South Asia and Central America.

Political and economic leaders at COP27 must recognise that a healthy planet is essential so everyone has access to enough nutritious food. They must also ensure that people across the globe have enough food to eat.

Limiting global warming to 1.5° celsius by immediately ending the use of fossil fuels is the most important step. But the commitments in the Paris Climate Accords, signed in 2015, go further than that.
