The Global Report on Food Crises 2023 highlights that the number of people experiencing hunger is on the rise. Action Against Hunger has a presence in some of the most crisis-laden countries listed in the report: Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Yemen. In these countries, 40 per cent of the population face critical levels of hunger. Action Against Hunger UK's Head of Advocacy, Kate Munro, responds to the report.

According to the international charity, the deal has allowed passage of vital food products since it was first signed, but it is only one solution to a much broader food crisis.

There has been a 50% increase over the last few years in the number of Syrian people facing food insecurity – overall, 15 million people need humanitarian assistance. This is in the face of conflict, the recent earthquake, a cholera outbreak, and drought. Action Against Hunger has been working in the country since 2008; it was one of the first humanitarian aid agencies to respond to the humanitarian crisis caused by the Syrian conflict. 14 million people have been supported so far through the charity’s programmes.

Today the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, James Cleverley, announced a refresh of the UK’s Integrated Review of Foreign Policy - it is meant to set the direction for action across government on foreign, trade, aid and defence policy, shaping the UK's role in the world for years to come. Following the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria The Prince and Princess of Wales meet agencies, including Action Against Hunger, as well as aid workers to hear about the immediate help and longer term plans to help children and families affected. Their Royal Highnesses also thank local fundraisers who have raised £121 million for the DEC Turkey-Syria earthquake appeal.

Four earthquakes and 3,000 aftershocks in just two weeks have not only left more than a million people homeless but also left them in a state of fear, shock and trauma. Without rapid psychological support, the impact on the mental health of survivors will be devastating.
With the conflict in Ukraine entering its second-year humanitarian needs continue to grow. Since the conflict started, Action Against Hunger has supported more than 650,000 people in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. For Action Against Hunger, it also reveals the fragility of our food systems and the need to reform them.
