Georgia

Despite economic growth over the last decade, the unresolved situations in Abkhazia and South Ossetia still cause social tension between communities.

Poverty has reduced by almost half in recent years in Georgia, however the political and social consequences of conflicts in the 1990s and 2008 have led to high unemployment rates.

In particular, the situation in the breakaway region of Abkhazia, which remains unresolved, has slowed improvements in the economic situation in the region.

In recent years, an invasive agricultural pest has also significantly affected the amount of food farmers in rural areas can produce. This has negatively affected ethnic minorities, particularly internally displaced people, women and young people.

Action Against Hunger’s work in Georgia

We’ve scaled up our entrepreneurship and social inclusion schemes throughout Georgia and Abkhazia. Working with local partner organisations, we’ve taught participants how to assess the labour market and create their own start-up companies.

We’ve also been able to improve local people’s livelihoods and access to food by:

  • providing agricultural equipment to vulnerable farmers
  • creating farming schools and agricultural centres to provide training courses
  • supporting local veterinary services and livestock farmers

Our reach

  • 8,667

We reached 8,667 people through our programmes in 2019.

  • 39

We have 39 staff based in Tbilisi, Gali and Sukumi.

  • 1994

We started working in Georgia in 1994.
