Action Against Hunger welcomes the adoption by Human Rights Council members of a resolution calling for the establishment of an International Eminent Group of Experts to conduct an inquiry on International humanitarian and human rights law violations committed by all parties to the conflict in Yemen. As war compounds the suffering of millions of Yemenis by the day, this resolution represents a real opportunity to hold belligerents accountable and help putting an end to the horror endured by civilians.

We also welcome the UK’s decision to support the resolution, which strongly shows its willingness to honor its commitments to international law and human rights, and not to fail millions of Yemenis in despair.

According to Erin Hutchinson, ACF Country Director in Yemen, this resolution is a first step forward for the millions of silent victims of the conflict in Yemen. Even if a bit below our initial hope, this first step to fight impunity has been reached despite strong pressure from a range of countries, including Saudi Arabia. With US, UK and France support due to the urgency and severity of the situation on the ground, we hope that the group of experts will path the way to a better respect of the laws of war by the parties, and will improve significantly the protection of Yemeni civilians.”
