I would cycle 500 miles: the beer pilgrimage that made a difference
Top supporters Alex and Rosie turned their bucket list cycle challenge into a fundraising success.

Alex Millhouse-Smith works at North Bar and North Brewing Co – a leading beer and bar group based in Leeds. So far, their partnership with Action Against Hunger is on track to raise more than £20,000.
As a beer connoisseur, Alex had long hoped to visit the Abbaye D'Orval brewery in France's beautiful Florenville. With a bucket list trip to cycle a 500-mile route from Rotterdam to Orval, Alex and his girlfriend Rosie were inspired to turn their beer pilgrimage into a fundraiser for Action Against Hunger.
We caught up with Alex to hear how by setting up a JustGiving page he gave this challenge a life-saving impact. In total, he and Rosie raised £800 to help fund Action Against Hunger's humanitarian programmes in almost 50 countries around the world.
WHY DID YOU SUPPORT ACTION AGAINST HUNGER?
"I decided to raise money for Action Against Hunger after seeing a presentation from their team at one of North’s quarterly meetings. I already had the cycle trip planned so, after hearing about what they do, I thought why not raise some money along the way."
DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING FROM THE EXPERIENCE?
"Three things! I can cycle 500 miles more easily than I imagined, always take a spare chain on a cycle challenge, and the fact you can always get a great beer in Belgium – even from a chippy."
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART?
"The cycle down the hill to Brasserie D’Orval and seeing the Abbaye emerge from between the trees. A real buzz of excitement went through me then."
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE THINKING OF FUNDRAISING FOR ACTION AGAINST HUNGER?
"Do it! If you can find a way to incorporate fundraising into your hobby or something you love doing, it makes it doubly fun!"
If you'd like to take on your own charity challenge, or if you already have a trip planned yourself and are looking to make it even more meaningful by fundraising for Action Against Hunger, why not get in touch with the fundraising team?
