Taking on an overseas challenge is a great way to push yourself physically and mentally, to meet like-minded people and to travel to exciting destinations. But it can also be about so much more than that.

When this month’s star supporter, Anushka Engineer, decided to tackle the Everest Base Camp Trek, she also chose to raise vital funds for Action Against Hunger’s lifesaving programmes.

By setting up a Just Giving page and reaching out to colleagues, friends and family around her, Anushka raised an incredible £2,090.85.

Anushka is now back from Nepal, full of great memories and with some amazing photos. She’s been in touch to tell us all about her experiences on the trek and what motivated her to join the generation fighting for a world free from hunger.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO SUPPORT ACTION AGAINST HUNGER?

"I chose to support Action Against Hunger as, throughout my travels, I've seen people suffering from hunger and malnutrition. It has been especially difficult to see children in this condition.

"Travelling to Zambia, Tanzania, India and other parts of Asia I have seen poverty and malnutrition on such a huge scale. I felt as though I had to do something to help so I decided to find an organisation that would help me make a difference."

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE CHALLENGE?

"Arriving at Base Camp I felt immensely happy! One of my favourite parts was getting to know the team that I hiked with – spending 11 intense days hiking together means you get to know people very well.

"I was extremely lucky that the team I had were kind, caring and supportive individuals. We all encouraged each other to take those next steps and celebrated together when we made it down the mountain."

WERE THERE ANY SURPRISES?

"The biggest surprise was the amount of donations I received. I initially made my target £500 however I raised just over £2,000 which I wasn’t expecting at all!

I'm so grateful to all my friends and family that donated money but also for all their messages of support. It really helped motivate me to climb that mountain."

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE THINKING OF FUNDRAISING FOR ACTION AGAINST HUNGER?

"I couldn’t imagine being born into a world where at five years old you don’t have food to feed yourself, or your brother or sister. This is often a consequence of your circumstances either through natural disaster or poverty. It isn’t fair, and these children deserve better.

"Action Against Hunger works in many different countries and concentrates on providing nutrition to people who need it most. Supporting them means we get one step closer to eliminating world hunger.

"You don’t have to hike up to Everest Base Camp, but I would definitely recommend it as the Himalayas are beautiful. But whatever way you choose to fundraise, good luck!"
