Burkina Faso

Over 2 million people do not have secure access to food in Burkina Faso

Country Overview

Burkina Faso is facing major challenges: access to jobs, education and health care, and the extensive exposure of the population to climate change such as flooding, drought and locust plagues. It ahs a growing population but despite recent improvements, the inequality in the distribution of wealth continues to put communities at risk of malnutrition. Under-nutrition is wide-spread, with 8.6% of the population being classed as acutely malnutrished in 2017.

Burkina Faso’s struggling economy is heavily dependent on rainfed agriculture to support its expanding population amidst successive waves of floods and droughts. The landlocked country’s population is particularly vulnerable to economic instability, such as high food prices, and has also been affected by the regional food shortages and drought experienced across the Sahel region.

As the population and influx of refugees from neighbouring countries such as Mali increases, food shortages and escalating prices have resulted in widespread hunger for many families. At present 2,631,631 people do not have secure access to food in Burkina Faso.

What we are doing

Action Against Hunger has been present in Burkina Faso since 2008, working to improve the access to food and to screen, prevent and treat severe malnutrition.

In 2017, our teams established nine new projects. Three of these were research projects, helping us to understand how to mitigate the consequences of nutrition insecurity by improving health systems. The other 6 projects aimed to increase the resilience of the population. Our teams promoted income-generating activities, diversified livelihoods, implemented economic recovery projects, and put programmes in place that provide access to clean water and food. We also organised disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation activities to protect rural populations.

Our programmes in Burkina Faso include:

  • Improving access to jobs and livelihoods
  • Improving access to clean water and sanitation
  • Preparing for potential droughts and floods
  • Screening and treating children with malnutrition
  • Psychosocial support groups
