Humanitarian context


Swaziland is a tiny, mountainous country with the highest HIV and AIDS prevalence in the world (33.4%). An extremely high percentage of the population has no access to drinking water. Two-thirds of the population live in chronic poverty and one quarter depend on food relief. Most inhabitants do not make it past the age of 40.

•    Chronic infant malnutrition rate: 37%

•    Political regime: absolutist monarchy

Action Against Hunger in Swaziland

Nutrition

  • Re-establishing a sustainable monitoring system to detect infant malnutrition.
  • Participating in the launch of a nationwide nutritional and mortality survey.
  •  Including the nutritional and mortality component in the surveys conducted by the World Food Programme and the vulnerability analyses.

Health

  • Training of healthcare and community staff in the treatment of malnutrition, in line with the appropriate treatment protocols.
  • Technical assistance for the Ministry of Health.
