After 14 years of conflict, the situation in Liberia has stabilised since the signing of the Accra peace agreements in 2003. Peace has been maintained thanks to the deployment of 15,000 peace-keeping forces from UNMIL (United Nations Mission in Liberia). Official disarmament (2004) and worldwide observance of the peace process led to the election of President Helen Johnson Sirleaf at the end of 2005 following a two years transitional government. Since 2005 tens of thousands of displaced persons and refugees who fled their villages during the war have returned to their communities. Reconstruction and the re-launch of government activities and services are now underway.
Despite the success of the 2003 peace agreement, Liberia remains in a post-conflict transition period. Security is fragile as a result of ongoing insecurity in the region. The need for public services, livelihood rehabilitation and infrastructure reconstruction remains enormous, especially in the capital Monrovia. Many families are still in the process of rebuilding their lives from scratch and continue to bear the scars of the war.
These challenges call for increased and sustained support from international organisations and local actors (government, civil society and the private sector). ACF will continue to work in Liberia in the near future to ensure a peaceful transition and help confront the challenges of rebuilding the country.
