Achieving Regional Integration: The key to success for the fight against hunger in West Africa
'Achieving Regional Integration: The key to success for the fight against hunger in West Africa' is the final report in the Zero Hunger series. It assesses the relevance and the potential of regional institutions and mechanisms in reducing hunger and undernutrition in West Africa, where, nearly four decades after the devastating droughts of the seventies, chronic hunger remains pervasive.
'Achieving Regional Integration: The key to success for the fight against hunger in West Africa' uses the six key success factors identified during phase 1 of Zero Hunger as a lens through which to analyse the role regional institutions have to play in the fight against hunger. The report finds that regional institutions are key; they can address a number of regional problems that cannot be tackled by individual states. Furthermore the regional level presents significant added values particularly in relation to food security. The report argues that, despite evident weaknesses, the existence and commitment of regional institutions represent a critical asset for the region in the fight against hunger.
