An interview with Conde Sekou

What is you role and what does it involve?

I have been the head of nutrition and Health Director for the town of Conakry for 6 months.
My role is to supervise the activities of the nutrition units in public and private health centres in the five communes of the town. I also work in partnership with NGOs working in these communes.

Could you provide an example of any recent achievements in the fight against malnutrition in Conakry?

Community agents have been recruited and trained by NGOs in nutrition which has considerably reduced the rates of malnutrition. Progress has been made through sensitisations and active screening of malnourished children in the communities.

What key goals do you set to overcome the challenges that you face?

  • Reducing the mortality of new born babies and young children
  • Providing all children with access to medical assistance and necessary care services, with the emphasis being on the development of primary health care
  • Combating disease and malnutrition – by using easily accessible techniques for the provision of food and drinkable water
  • Providing prenatal healthcare to mothers
