02/06/11 Action Against Hunger prepares for worsening crisis as rising tensions displace tens of thousands in Southern Sudan

As the date for southern independence draws near, tensions in Sudan are rising steadily and tens of thousands of people have fled their homes. Humanitarian organisation Action Against Hunger has launched an emergency response to provide families with nutritional assistance and immediate access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene.

The most severe time of year for Dona Victoria and her is between May and August. This is the hunger season. During these months food prices are extremely high and merchants cease trading in the village because people cannot afford to buy their goods. As a result villagers have to walk for two hours or more to the city of Jocotan, where they pay double the normal price for maize.

Three months after the start of conflict in Libya, thousands of displaced families are still crossing the Libyan-Tunisian border to escape the violence amid a decline in the pace of repatriations.
