International Law Firm Hogan Lovells Supports Action Against Hunger's Work in Liberia

22 May 2012 - On 14th May, a cross-border team from Hogan Lovells returned from a trip to Liberia to visit projects on which international law firm is collaborating with Action Against Hunger and the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, as part of its pro bono and charitable giving programmes.

Action Against Hunger was selected in 2011 as Hogan Lovells' global charitable partner until December 2013. The firms' fundraising efforts and donations are being used to help run a therapeutic feeding centre and outpatient treatments and prevention work in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.

Hogan Lovells is also working in a pro bono capacity with the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to draft legislation on public health within the country.

Washington D.C. partner Philip Katz and associate Margia Corner, part of the Hogan Lovells pro bono team, accompanied by London Community Affairs Officer Lynne Peabody, visited the hospital and in-patient facility for children suffering from malnutrition.

Upon leaving, they presented the centre with teddy bears knitted by members of Hogan Lovells' London office.

Commenting on the trip, Lynne Peabody said:
"The trip was a humbling experience. The hospital is extremely rudimentary with basic facilities and not enough of them to serve the communities in which it operates. The facility was full of children, some as young as two weeks, suffering from severe malnourishment often in addition to other complications such as malaria. What struck me and my colleagues most was how quiet and listless the children were – they didn't have the energy to move, cry, or even eat. Seeing this really brought to the forefront the importance of Hogan Lovells' support of these charity and pro bono initiatives."

Philip Katz added: "The work done by ACF is incredibly important, and it is inspiring to see the innovative and efficient ways in which they go about their mission, and the success they’re having.  It’s also gratifying to see their very tangible work in the field, which nicely complements our work drafting proposed statutes and regulations for the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare."

Hogan Lovells will coordinate a global fundraising campaign across all offices in October to coincide with World Food Day and raise funds for this important work.
