The cargo plane chartered by humanitarian organisation Action Against Hunger on Friday arrived to Port-au-Prince at noon today, carrying relief supplies including 20 tons of water and sanitation equipment. These crucial supplies will add to the two water treatment units already brought in from Action Against Hunger’s programmes in the nearby city of Gonaives. Action Against Hunger’s teams in Port-au-Prince have now fully mobilised to provide drinking water to the quake survivors.
Action Against Hunger’s water and sanitations teams have already identified suitable water distribution sites. Emergency water bladders will be used to provide potable water, enabling our teams to mitigate the enormous water and sanitation challenges facing the Haitian population. Our teams are also working to repair the water network. (Article continues below)
"Working in coordination with other humanitarian actors on the ground, Action Against Hunger will provide drinking water to 35,000 people from three distribution points across the city,” said Jean Michel Grand, Action Against Hunger’s Executive Director. “We are also preparing to send another cargo plane carrying 87 tons of water and sanitation equipment and food aid from France on Monday. Relief supplies will include 4 water treatment units, 45 tons of protein biscuits to provide for the nutritional needs of 18,000 children under five years old for two weeks, two extra cars donated by Citroen to replace the cars damaged by the earthquake, 12,000 buckets for water storage as well as face masks, gloves, and protective gear to ensure the safety of ACF’s teams as they work in dangerous, unsanitary conditions.”
Action Against Hunger is preparing for an emergency response lasting several months. In addition to water and sanitation programmes, a key concern for our teams is to ensure optimal infant feeding to prevent malnutrition in children under five years old.
Action Against Hunger has implemented programmes in Haiti since 1985, carrying out emergency measures in the areas of health and nutrition. Since 2001, ACF has focused primarily on food security and water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in both emergency and development contexts in Port de Paix, Gonaives, Anse Rouge and Jeremiah.
