On February 8th 2010, top chefs Vickram Purewal from Le Bouchon Breton, Atul Kochar of Benares, Herbert Berger of 1 Lombard Street, John Burton-Race and Chris Galvin of Galvin la Chapelle came together for an exclusive Haiti fundraising dinner that raised over £70,000 in aid of Action Against Hunger's relief operation.
Moved to action by the news of the devastating earthquake which struck Haiti on January 12th, Sabrina Ghayour and Foodepedia mobilised chefs, sponsors and foodies and pulled off an extraordinary evening of gourmet food and drink. Le Bouchon Breton kindly provided the venue for the night.
"We would like to thank Sabrina Ghayour, Foodepedia and event sponsors Fidessa for organising this fantastic event, helping us raise much-needed funds towards our life-saving programmes in Haiti," said Action Against Hunger's Executive Director Jean-Michel Grand. "The consequences of this disaster are unimaginable and it will take a long time before Haitians will be able to return to any kind of normality. The funds raised this evening are crucial for continuing our programmes." (Article cont'd below)
"I just couldn't sit and watch this tragedy unfold before my eyes," said event organiser Sabrina Ghayour. "Haiti is already a dreadfully poor country and with many people still rebuilding their lives after the hurricanes of 2008, it is just horrific to think what the lucky survivors must be going through right now."
"I chose Action Against Hunger, because they were one of the first charity aid-workers to reach Haiti. I have always supported their efforts as a charity and know where the money goes, how it is used and that they don't just throw money at a problem short-term and then walk away, they stay on setting up projects to help people deal with the rebuilding their lives on an ongoing basis."
