7 February 2011 - The ongoing political stalemate triggered by contested elections in Ivory Coast has plunged the country into economic, political and social turmoil and led to a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
The nutrition situation in the Moyen Cavally and Montagnes regions is particularly worrying. These regions are experiencing high food insecurity due to low purchasing power and reduced land for cultivation. In the Montagnes region, the chronic malnutrition rate amongst children under five years old is 43.4 percent, surpassing the emergency threshold of 40 percent.
The prolonged crisis has disrupted and restricted access to health and other public services in the region at a time when supplies are not getting through and health centres are overcrowded due to the influx of displaced people to the region. In this situation, malnourished children are particularly at risk.
In collaboration with UNICEF, Action Against Hunger is implementing nutrition programmes aimed at treating 4,600 malnourished children under the age of five and providing support to over 2,300 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, as well as monitoring the overall nutrition situation in the region. The organisation will also provide supplies to local hospitals and health centres where usual supply chains have been disrupted.
In addition, Action Against Hunger’s teams will launch water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in areas with a large influx of displaced people such as Man, Danané and Duékué to address the rapidly deteriorating living conditions and lack of access to clean water and sanitation. Action Against Hunger plans to construct 400 latrines and 125 showers in both host communities and sheltering sites, and will distribute 4,000 hygiene kits. In addition, 40 community-based hygiene promoters will be trained to roll out hygiene education programmes to help prevent diseases.
