4 March 2011 - With tens of thousands of people continuing to flee towards the Tunisian border with Libya, Action Against Hunger | ACF International has dispatched an emergency response team to assess the nutrition, water and sanitation needs on the ground. The team includes experts in logistics, water and sanitation, and food security.
The International Organisation for Migration estimates that some 100,000 people have already fled into neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt. Many more are waiting on the Libyan side of the border, hoping to flee the continuing violence amid worrying sanitation, food and hygiene conditions.
“The humanitarian situation is precarious. Every day, thousands of people arrive at the border and it is crucial that they receive aid to meet their basic needs,” said Javier Pérez, who heads ACF’s emergency response team. “We will work in collaboration with the different UN agencies on the ground in those areas where the situation has become critical.”
