Pakistan: Six Months After the Floods

26 January 2011- Last July Pakistan was hit by the worst flooding in its history. Monsoon rains swept away homes, bridges and roads, leaving millions displaced and in need of immediate assistance.

Since the floods our emergency programmes have reached some 550,000 Pakistanis whose lives have been turned upside down. Our first priority was to contain the spread of deadly water-borne illnesses by providing access to clean water and emergency sanitation while we work to rehabilitate water networks and distribution systems.

ACF is also helping families who have lost everything get back on their feet through access to small cash grants to jump-start businesses, seeds and tools for the new agricultural season, and cash-for-work programmes to generate income.

27,400 basic hygiene kits delivered in make-shift camps to prevent outbreaks of deadly water-borne illnesses

5,000 food rations distributed to flood-affected families struggling to get back on their feet

1,100 emergency latrines and showers constructed, benefiting nearly 42,000 displaced Pakistanis

78 million liters of clean water trucked in and 325 water points rehabilitated, providing clean water access for over 300,000 people

2,630 cash grants disbursed to small business owners to re-start their micro-enterprises after the floods
