Pedalling to Paris in one day for Action Against Hunger

The 18 strong team sets off from Action Against Hunger's offices

Top supporters get in gear for epic 24 hour cycle challenge

14 June 2012 - A team of 18 biking enthusiasts pushed themselves to their limits as they cycled from London to Paris in under 24 hours to raise vital funds for Action Against Hunger.

Setting the pace was long term supporter, Graham Hazell, who donned his helmet and lycra to lead the team as they set off on the 200 mile challenge from the charity’s offices in Greenwich.

The team peddled non-stop, resting only for the short ferry crossing, comfort breaks and food, as they headed towards Paris’s iconic Arc de Triomphe.  Their aim was to raise over £20,000 for Action Against Hunger’s life-saving work in this ambitious challenge, which normally takes up to four days for most charity bike rides.

Retired entrepreneur, Graham, and his wife, Laura (who drove the support van), witnessed Action Against Hunger’s life-saving work for themselves two years ago when they visited programmes in Liberia, which inspired Graham to set himself the epic challenge.

Graham says: “The deprivation in Liberia, like so many other parts of Africa, was stark. Yet it was clear that Action Against Hunger’s work was solving some of the basic problems such as providing water supplies and local food production. We saw hope-inspiring projects across a range of their activities.

“I love cycling and so when the chance of biking from London to Paris came up, I knew I had to get involved. Most teams seem to do the event over three or four days but we decided to try it out in just one!”

Action Against Hunger’s Head of Events, Becca McRow, said: “Graham and his family have been an incredible support to Action Against Hunger over the years and this great challenge certainly pushed the whole team to their limits. We are hugely grateful to Graham for getting the team together and raising lots of funds to help the fight against child hunger. They all did an amazing job with their challenge and we are very proud of all of them!”
