unearthed®, supplier of delicious Mediterranean food, has been an enthusiastic supporter of Action Against Hunger since June 2010. The company provides year round support by donating one penny from the sale of each unearthed® product to Action Against Hunger. To date, unearthed® have raised more than £100,000 for the charity.
Simon Day Head of Marketing says "unearthed was born out of the enjoyment of food and flavours. We realise that for many people in this world, food remains a worry and a necessity in short supply, rather than a joy. Whilst the variety we are privileged to enjoy may be unrealistic for all, we share Action Against Hunger's vision of a world without hunger at least. We want to make food less of a concern and more of a pleasure for others in future."
unearthed® is the first national ambassador brand for Action Against Hunger. unearthed® products are available through Waitrose, Ocado, Abel & Cole and Budgens. Action Against Hunger's logo features on all unearthed® packaging, clearly promoting our partnership and raising awareness of the charity, reaching consumers nationwide. There are now around 50 product lines from olives and continental meats to pâtés and Spanish omelette. Their best-selling olive is pimento stuffed with manchego and chilli, and their biggest selling product is prosciutto crudo. We encourage you to support the partnership, and help raise funds for Action Against Hunger programmes, by purchasing unearthed® products.
A portion of unearthed®’s donation is used to support an innovative grassroots project in Zambia. The initiative provides the community with the tools to encourage long term independence and sustainability, allowing the community to help itself. Money raised by unearthed® is used to purchase goats for grandparent-headed households, looking after children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Offspring of the donated goats can provide income or meat to the households, and a number will also be donated to other families in the community. unearthed®’s donations also fund micro loans so that local beneficiaries have the opportunity and means to start their own business. The remainder of the donation is used to support other initiatives.
As well as donating money from product sales, staff at unearthed® support Action Against Hunger in a variety of other fun ways. In September 2010, the unearthed® team entered runners and raised sponsorship in the charity’s inaugural Corporate Challenge 10km running race. They enjoyed the day so much that they will be entering a team in this year’s race on Wednesday 7 September 2011 in Regent’s Park.
In December 2010, Simon Day recorded a video of support for the charity as part of a Ford Focus global competition on Facebook, winning a $10,000 donation to the charity. To see the video on YouTube click here.
This summer, staff at unearthed® and their colleagues at Winterbotham Darby are putting their test kitchen to good use, having a ‘Cook Off’ competition to raise money for Action Against Hunger. Two contestants are given one hour to create a dish of their choosing, before being marked by colleagues who have made a contribution of at least 50p to taste and judge the food. The winning contestant then goes through to the next round. The competition is proving very popular and has already raised hundreds of pounds for the charity.
